Building a Culture of Welcome

Imagine leaving everything behind—your home, your family, your career—because staying meant risking your life. Refugees flee their homes due to war, violence, or persecution. They come seeking safety and the chance to rebuild their lives, often enduring dangerous and uncertain journeys to get here.

Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary is part of a national movement committed to fostering understanding and inclusion for refugees. We want to create a culture where everyone feels valued and supported, regardless of their background.

Our approach is rooted in partnership and community. We have over 100 members – including local businesses, schools, faith groups, and people like you – who help weave a network of support across the valley. Together, we help refugees settle, integrate, and thrive. Whether it’s providing practical help, offering a listening ear, or simply extending kindness, we can all play a role in building a more compassionate Calderdale.

When we welcome people seeking safety, when people are allowed to rebuild their lives, everyone is better for it. Yet misconceptions about refugees persist. That’s why we want to set the record straight:

MYTH 1: Refugees should stay in the first safe country they reach.
FACT: There is no legal requirement for refugees to claim asylum in the first safe country. Many come to the UK because of family connections, language, or historical ties. The UK only houses 1% of the world’s refugees – just 0.7% of the UK population!

MYTH 2: Most refugees come by small boats.
FACT: Recent figures show just 3.7% of immigrants arrived by small boats. The vast majority of those are seeking asylum – Afghans make up the largest nationality coming by boat, of which 98% are granted asylum (2024).

MYTH 3: Asylum seekers live off benefits.
FACT: People seeking asylum live on just £49 per week and are not allowed to work while their claim is processed. We know that 94% want to work and contribute to their new society, and the UK economy would gain an estimated £333 million if they were allowed.

Supporting people who need our help is the right thing to do. ⁣It should be something we’re proud of.
