Sisters United

A group of women and children from Sisters United stand together in a group

Sisters United is a group run by women for women. We welcome all women and especially those seeking asylum and from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
We come together to build our community, to offer support to each other and to lift our voices through activism, education and wellbeing activities.

Our group meets every Monday 1-3pm at Queen’s Road Neighbourhood Centre, Queen’s Road, HX1 4NE.

We provide food, refreshments and free activities. Children are welcome and we can sometimes help with transport costs.

Formed by women attending St. Augustine’s Centre who wanted a space for women and also to be more actively involved in organising activities for themselves and supporting their community, we are now separately constituted and have our own funding, but we are still a ‘sister organisation’ to St. Augustine’s.

Our work is around building community, solidarity and confidence among women from all backgrounds, although the majority of members are those with experience of asylum/immigration systems. At our weekly meeting we do a range of educational, wellbeing and social activities. The fourth arm of our action is campaigning, having led campaigns for asylum accommodation improvement and Lift the Ban in Calderdale.

We organise through WhatsApp, with a group that members can join to stay in touch with each other and share information and activities.

Our group is user-led: over half of the volunteers/committee have lived experience and are supported by a small group of women without lived experience of the asylum system.
