We are proud to support a closed performance of Refuge Island by Whispered Tales at Ryburn Valley High School, with pupils joining from Greetland Academy.
REFUGE ISLAND is a 20-minute dance performance that shares stories of female migration and the human capacity to offer a place of refuge in times of crisis. Set within a surreal pedestrian refuge island a lone woman appears and we begin to hear just why she braved the elements to leave her much-loved home.
The show involves first-hand accounts from three women. The first is a woman of Irish descent who shares her grandmother’s story from the 1940s. The second is Vanja, who fled Bosnia in the 1990s; the third is Saghur’s story, who fled Afghanistan in 2021.
After the performance, the director and performer will host a Q+A where we will discuss the process of making the show, explain a little more about the three women who sought refuge here in England and answer any questions. The show also comes with an Educational Pack created in collaboration with The British Red Cross.
