We are thrilled to announce that Hind and the Jaffa Cakes, a vibrant Halifax/Hebden Bridge-based band made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds, have become the UK’s first and only officially recognised Band of Sanctuary.
Hind and the Jaffa Cakes bring together performers from all walks of life, united by one belief: music transcends all differences.
They have performed across the North of England — in schools, community centres, theatres and public spaces — sharing a message that is both deeply human and urgently needed: people seeking sanctuary are not threats — they are neighbours, creators, contributors.
From Liverpool to Sheffield, and right here in Calderdale, their performances open up space for audiences to connect, reflect and feel moved.
They were also part of our 2024 Celebration & AGM Event, where their music brought the room to life and reminded us all why welcome matters.
What Makes a Band a Place of Sanctuary?
To be recognised with a Sanctuary Award, organisations must show a deep and ongoing commitment to learning about the experiences of people seeking sanctuary, embedding inclusive practices, and sharing those values with others.
Hind and the Jaffa Cakes don’t just talk about welcome — they live it.
Here’s just one story that captures what they do so beautifully:
“For several weeks, a centre member gazed longingly at our weekly music session at the centre, but was reluctant to join in. After some cajoling, she relented and indicated that she would like to sing but we would have to sit with our backs to her. She then proceeded to sing most beautifully, before confiding that she loved to sing , could not really stop herself singing, but had only ever sung within the confines of her home, and even that was frowned upon by certain members of the family. Our welcome and inclusion gave her the strength to strike out on her own path in life and now she is one of our most regular singers, and has led work shops and has achieved personal freedom and autonomy.“
This is what sanctuary looks like.
Why Sanctuary in the Arts Matters
Art crosses divides. It opens hearts. It gives voice to those too often silenced.
That’s why Sanctuary in the Arts is a growing national network of theatres, choirs, festivals, galleries and now — bands — working to:
- Platform lived experience
- Foster inclusion and healing through creativity
- Challenge harmful narratives
- Celebrate the cultural contributions of people seeking sanctuary
We’re proud to now count Hind and the Jaffa Cakes among this inspiring group.
