At our next meeting, we will focus on finalising plans for Refugee Week and determining ways we can collaborate for successful events.

Whether you are an arts focussed business, organisation or a creative individual you are very much welcome to attend.

WHY should you attend the Arts & Culture Network?

Over the last year and a half, we have watched as horrific conflicts left people in Afghanistan, Ukraine, and other places fleeing for their lives. We have seen how quickly our world can be changed, and many of those people are now seeking sanctuary in our own borough. Our welcome and hospitality are needed now more than ever.

Arts and cultural organisations play a vital role in challenging the status quo and shaping the kind of welcoming society we hope to live in. Art and creativity can inspire new ways of thinking and feeling, helping ordinary people understand the realities for those making difficult journeys, leaving behind loved ones and all that is familiar. ‘Welcome’ and ‘sanctuary’ are verbs, they are doing words. Sanctuary must be enacted, must be demonstrated; art, creativity and cultural expression have the power to show welcome and inspire a wider culture of welcome.

That’s why we set up a new Sanctuary Arts & Culture Network. We want to explore ways we can spread a culture of welcome, learn from each other, and provide support for refugees and people seeking asylum in our borough.

This is a great opportunity to meet other creatives in the community and discuss how we can support refugees and those seeking asylum, specifically through the arts. Please feel free to bring your flyers and business cards for networking, too.
