Hebden Bridge Picture House Re-accredited as Cinema of Sanctuary

We are thrilled to announce that Hebden Bridge Picture House has once again been recognised for its outstanding commitment to inclusivity and welcome. On Saturday, 14 December 2024, the cinema was officially re-accredited as the UK’s only (so far!) Cinema of Sanctuary. This well-deserved award was presented to the cinema and the Friends of the Picture House by Laura Beesley, our Chair of Trustees.

Pete, the manager of Hebden Bridge Picture House, expressed his joy at working with Kate, Moya, and the team of dedicated volunteers on sanctuary-related activities, calling it the best part of his job. Their ongoing efforts ensure that the cinema remains a welcoming and inclusive space for refugees and other people seeking sanctuary in Calderdale.

The award presentation followed a heartwarming Christmas party organised by the Making Friends volunteers. A large group of sanctuary-seeking families enjoyed a festive celebration, complete with a special screening of Moana 2. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who came together—some at the last minute!—to make the event a resounding success. A special shout-out to Iman and Sanaa from St. Augustine’s Centre, who generously gave their time on a Saturday to support the families attending.

The Sanctuary Awards are open to local organisations, businesses, and groups of all sizes that are committed to fostering a culture of welcome and support. If you’d like to learn more about how your organisation can get involved, get in touch with us – [email protected].
