Calderdale Welcomes You – Curious Motion

Next up in our National Lottery funded Welcome Project series, we’re featuring Curious Motion.

Curious Motion is a community arts and health organisation, using dance and movement to tackle loneliness and isolation in the lower valley. They provide accessible creative experiences that facilitate togetherness, friendship, and kindness, and are open to everyone. The programmes include regular classes and workshops alongside performances and events.

Curious Motion particularly focus on working in Elland and the lower valley areas due to connections with local people in the area, who have difficulties accessing opportunities locally. This includes refugees and asylum seekers and they are working to change this.

The group has worked with a number of people seeking sanctuary via the current project ‘Elland’s Happiness Lab’, which is measuring happiness in the area through the arts. So far, this has included a special ‘Rainbow Art Trail’ for children seeking sanctuary, and a number of adults joining in a music and movement class, ‘Rhythm & Brews’. In the 2020 lockdowns, Curious Motion also delivered wellbeing boxes directly to the homes of a number of refugee and asylum seeking families.
